X-ray constraints on the number of stellar mass black holes in the inner parsec

چکیده
Due to dynamical friction stellar mass black holes should form a cusp in the inner parsec. Calculations [5, 6] show that approximately 20 thousand black holes would be present in a sphere with radius of about a parsec around Sgr A*. The presence of these objects opens up the possibility that they might be accreting “cool” gas (i.e. the Minispiral) as discussed by Morris [6]. Here we calculate the X-ray emission expected from these black holes as a method to constrain their population. We find that the data limits the total number of such black holes to around 10− 20 thousand. Even a much smaller number of such black holes, i.e. 5 thousand, is sufficient to produce several sources with X-ray luminosity above LX ∼ 10 erg s−1 at any one time. We suggest that some of the discrete X-ray sources observed by Muno [7] with Chandra in the inner parsec may be such “fake X-ray binaries”.

Constraining the number of compact remnants near Sgr A ∗
Due to dynamical friction stellar mass black holes and neutron stars are expected to form high density cusps in the inner parsec of our Galaxy. These compact remnants, expected to number around 20000, may be accreting cold dense gas present there, and give rise to potentially observable X-ray emission. Here we build a simple but detailed time-dependent model of such emission. We find that at le...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملX - rays from cusps of compact remnants near galactic centres
Compact remnants – stellar mass black holes and neutron stars formed in the inner few parsec of galactic centres are predicted to sink into the central parsec due to dynamical friction on low mass stars, forming a high concentration cusp (Morris, 1993). Same physical region may also contain very high density molecular clouds and accretion discs that are needed to fuel SMBH activity. Here we est...
متن کاملAn Overabundance of Transient X-ray Binaries within 1 Pc of the Galactic Center
During five years of Chandra observations, we have identified seven X-ray transients located within 23 pc of Sgr A. These sources each vary in luminosity by more than a factor of 10, and have peak X-ray luminosities greater than 5 × 10 erg s, which strongly suggests that they are accreting black holes or neutron stars. The peak luminosities of the transients are intermediate between those typic...
متن کاملA Comparison of Intermediate-mass Black Hole Candidate Ultraluminous X-ray Sources and Stellar-mass Black Holes
Cool thermal emission components have recently been revealed in the X-ray spectra of a small number of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with ergs s 1 in nearby galaxies. These components can be well 40 L ≥ 10 X fitted with accretion disk models, with temperatures approximately 5–10 times lower than disk temperatures measured in stellar-mass Galactic black holes when observed in their brightes...
